One-Time Payouts
Notices of investible special
dividend announcements are posted on Twitter: @harrydomash
Special dividends are unexpected one-time
payouts that are often much larger than regular dividends.
For instance, regular quarterly dividends typically amount to around 1%
of the stock's trading price (yield) compared to 3% or 4%, and sometimes
much higher, for special payouts. Those higher yields mean that the
dividend effect is less likely to be washed out by daily trading price
fluctuations.

Recommended Special Dividend
Capture Strategy
The larger the dollar amount of the payout,
the better your chances of a profitable trade. In other words, a $3.00
special dividend will likely result in a more profitable trade than a
$2.00 payout.
The yield percentage probably won't affect
your results. That is, a $3.00 payout on a $15 stock (20% yield)
probably wouldn't be more profitable than a $3.00 payout on a $100 stock
(3% yield).
Follow these trading rules:
1) Buy on the announcement date or no later
than two market days after the announcement.
2) Sell on day before the ex-dividend
date.
Selling before the ex-date sounds counterintuitive because you won't
collect the dividend. However, share prices often rise leading up to the
ex-date, and then drop on the ex-date. The ex-date drop often exceeds
the actual dividend. Based on our research, you'll usually make more
money selling before the ex-date, instead of collecting the dividend and
then selling at a later date.
Further, following this strategy will allow you to execute
many more capture plays in any given time period.
Many factors, especially overall market
action and news pertaining to your stocks, will often override the
special dividend amount, and determine your trade's profitability. So
your trades will not necessarily be profitable.

an
ongoing business, average daily trading volume must exceed 5,000
shares, the payout must be in cash, and 1) the payout must be at
least $2/ share, or 2) the payout must be at least $0.50/share and
the yield must be at least 7%.
