Diversified REITs

Colonial Properties Trust (CLP)

Owns and manages multifamily residential, office and retail properties located in Sunbelt states from Virginia to Nevada. Acquired by Mid-America Apartment Communities in June 2013.

Thomas Properties Group  (TPGI)

Owns, develops and operates office, retail and multi-family properties throughout the U.S. Acquired by Parkway Properties Group in September 2013 .

Winthrop Realty  (FUR)

Owns and operates real property and invests in real estate financial instruments including CMBS, real estate debt and REIT Securities. In August 2014, shareholders approved a liquidation plan.

Healthcare REITs


A March 2013 IPO, AVIV owns more than 280 post-acute and long-term care skilled nursing facilities in 29 states. Acquired by Omega Healthcare Investors in April 2015.

BioMed Realty Trust (BMR)

Owns research and development facilities that it leases to government agencies, biotech, pharmaceutical, and other firms involved in the life science industry. Its properties are mainly located in major U.S. life science markets: Boston, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York/New Jersey.  Acquired by Blackstone Group in January 2016.

Industrial REITs

AMB Property

Owned and managed industrial facilities in major hub and gateway distribution markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia.  Acquired by ProLogis in June 2011.

Mission West Properties (MSW)

Owns and leases commercial R&D properties, primarily located in the Silicon Valley section of the San Francisco Bay Area. Acquired by private equity investors in 2012.

Mortgage/Finance REITs

CapLease (LSE)

Finances commercial real estate that is net leased primarily to single tenants with investment grade or near investment grade credit ratings. Acquired by American Realty Capital Properties in May 2013.

Capital Trust (CT)

Makes mezzanine and other types of specialty backed by  commercial real estate assets. Suspended regular dividend payouts in December 2008, but declared a 2.00 per share  special dividend in December 2012. Acquired by Blackstone Group in December 2012.

Care Investment Trust (CVTR) 

Invests healthcare-related real estate and commercial mortgage debt. A 2007 IPO externally managed and advised by a unit of CIT Group. Had planned to liquidate in 2009, but instead was acquired by Tiptree Financial Partners.

Crexus Investment Corp. (CXS) 

September 2009 IPO acquires, manages and finances commercial mortgage loans, commercial real estate debt, and other commercial real estate-related assets. Acquired by by Annaly Capital Management in November 2012.

Gramercy Capital (GKK)

Originates and acquires senior loans, mezzanine loans and distressed property loans secured by commercial and multi-family properties. Suspended dividend in September 2008. Changed name to Gramercy Property Trust in April 2013.

PMC Commercial Trust (PCC) 

Originates loans to small businesses such as motels, franchises, shopping centers, apartments, office buildings, retail stores, and factories, primarily secured by related real estate. Acquired by CIM Urban REIT in March 2014.

Office REITs

Brookfield Properties (BPO)

Owns office properties in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Acquired by private equity investors in June 2014. 

MPG Office Trust (MPG)

Formerly Maguire Properties, MPG owns and manages Class A office properties in the Los Angeles central business district and in other parts of Southern California. Seven of its office buildings were taken by lenders in a default action in 2009. Suspended dividend payouts in March 2008. Acquired by Brookfield Office Properties in April, 2013.

Residential REITs

Associated Estates Realty (AEC)

A January 2010 IPO, AEC owns and operates apartment communities located in 10 states. Acquired by Brookfield Asset Management in August 2015.

BRE Properties (BRE)

Owns and manages apartment communities in coastal areas of California, Arizona and the Seattle, Washington area. Acquired by Essex Property Trust in April 2014.

Home Properties (HME)

Owns and manages apartment communities located in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic markets. Acquired by private equity investors in October 2015.

Trade Street Residential (TSRE)

A May 2013 IPO, Trade Street, formerly Feldman Mall Properties, owns and operates garden-style and mid-rise apartment communities in mid-sized cities and suburban submarkets of larger cities primarily in the southeastern US. Acquired by Independence Realty Trust in September 2015.

Retail REITs

American Realty Trust (ARCT)

Owns commercial real estate, primarily freestanding single tenant properties in the United States and Puerto Rico.  In September 2012, agreed to be acquired Realty Income Corporation.

Cole Real Estate Investments (COLE)

A June 2013 IPO, Cole owns more than 1,000 net-leased properties.   Acquired by American Realty Capital Properties in October 2013.

CapLease (LSE)

Invests primarily in single tenant commercial assets targeted to high-credit quality tenants under long-term leases. Acquired by American Realty Capital Properties in May 2013.

Cole Real Estate Investments (COLE)

A June 2013 IPO, Cole owns more than 1,000 net-leased properties.   Acquired by American Realty Capital Properties in October 2013.

Glimcher Realty Trust (GRT)

Owned 28 shopping centers in 15 states.  Acquired by Washington Prime Group in January 2015.

Inland Real Estate (IRC)

Owns and manages neighborhood, community and single-tenant retail centers located mostly in the Midwest. Acquired by by DRA Advisors LLC in March 2016.
