A January 2013 IPO, Altisource rents out single family homes acquired when in or near foreclosure. Managed by publicly traded Altisource Asset Management (AAMC).

American Campus Communities (ACC)

Develops and operates student housing communities located on or near college and university campuses.

Apartment Investment & Management (AIV)

The largest owner/operator of apartment communities in the U.S. with properties in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Avalon Bay Communities (AVB)

Owns and operates upscale apartment communities in 10 states and the District of Columbia.

Bluerock Residential Growth (BRG)

A March 2014 IPO, BRG, externally managed by Bluerock Multifamily Advisor, LLC, invests in institutional-quality apartment properties in upscale growth markets.

BRT Apartments (BRT)

BRT, formerly BRT Realty Trust, a business trust, converted to a corporation and changed its name to BRT Apartments in March 2017. Owns and manages multifamily properties in the southeastern U.S. Declared first dividend in September 2017.

Camden Property Trust (CPT)

Owns and manages around 200 apartment communities located throughout the U.S.


Formerly Education Realty Trust, EdR owns and manages more than 80 student housing communities in 23 states. 

Equity LifeStyle Properties (ELS)

Formerly Home Communities, Inc., Equity owns and operates more than 300 manufactured housing communities in 28 states and in British Columbia, Canada.

Equity Residential (EQR)

Owns and manages more than 450 apartment communities in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

Essex Property Trust (ESS)

Owns and manages more than 150 apartment communities located on the U.S. West Coast.  

Independence Realty Trust (IRT)

A June 2011 IPO,  Independence invests in multifamily residential properties. Externally advised by by RAIT Financial Trust. Pays monthly dividends.

Maxus Realty (MRTI) - (pink sheets)

Owns and manages apartment buildings and a few office buildings in Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. Delisted from NASDAQ in July 2008. Suspended dividend payouts in December 2008. Resumed paying monthly dividends in July 2015.


Formerly Mid-America Apartment Communities, MAA owns and manages apartment communities in the south-central and southeastern U.S.

NexPoint Residential Trust (NXRT)

A March 2015 spin-off from NexPoint Credit Strategies (NHF), NXRT owns and manages middle income multifamily properties with "value-add" potential, primarily in the Southeastern and Southwestern states. Externally managed by Highland Capital Management.

Post Properties (PPS)

Owns and manages upscale resort-style garden and high density urban apartments, and condominiums in nine markets across the U.S.

Preferred Apartment Communities (APTS)

An April 2011 IPO, Preferred acquires multifamily residential properties throughout the U.S. Also invests in mortgage loans secured by multifamily residential properties.

Sun Communities (SUI)

Owns and operates more than 240 manufactured housing communities, mostly in Florida, Indiana, and Michigan. Also  sells new and used homes for placement in its communities.


Owns and manages middle-market apartment communities nationwide.

UMH Properties (UMH)

Owns and operates around 100 manufactured housing communities in New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania , Tennessee, Indiana and Michigan.
